For Yudy Mena, becoming a fruit cart vendor was a dream she and her husband talked about for years. Like many families, they wanted to build something of their own, and create a source of income they can be proud of. For them, this idea came in the form of selling fresh fruit. It was familiar, honest work, and it fit the lifestyle they wanted to make together.

What made Yudy’s dream feel out of reach was access. She needed to learn the rules, how to operate legally, and navigate the confusing world of permits, health department approvals, and startup costs.

That challenge shifted from a daunting obstacle to a seamless experience through the partnership between ICON CDC and The Food Truck Group.

Yudy’s Vision to Become a Fruit Cart Vendor

Yudy’s priority was to sell fresh fruit from a cart that looked professional and operated legally. Many food vendors risk trouble and citations if they’re caught operating without proper permits. She understood the risk and chose to do things the right way, even if it took more time and effort to achieve.

What she needed was a health permitted fruit cart that could legally operate as a Compact Mobile Food Operation, or CMPO.

To get there, Yudy needed to ask herself: How do I get approved by the health department? What paperwork is required? Who can help me handle the blueprints and fruit cart inspections?

These questions can be overwhelming for anyone, and even stop them before they begin.

Yudy needed a support system to see her vision through, and that’s where ICON CDC and The Food Truck Group came in.

The Fruit Cart Giveaway That Made It Possible

In 2023, ICON CDC organized a fruit cart giveaway aimed at supporting aspiring sidewalk vendors to overcome the massive hurdles many in this field face when they first start.

Through this grant opportunity, Yudy was selected as the recipient. The grant funded her fruit cart, allowing Yudy to focus on building her business without worry on upfront equipment expenses. The cart was officially named Yudy’s Amazing Fruit, representing her pride and marking the start of her family business.

How ICON CDC Helped

ICON CDC is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, dedicated to supporting local entrepreneurs and strengthening small businesses throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Their support for Yudy was significant, helping her get a foot through the door as a fruit vendor. Beyond funding the fruit cart, ICON CDC provided the project structure and momentum.

Programs like this create real opportunities for people who are ready to work but need help with resources and support.

ICON CDC didn’t stop at just awarding the grand. They helped in the coordination for Yudy’s fruit cart opening, brought the community together, and celebrated Yudy’s achievement along with her.

How The Food Truck Group Helped

The Food Truck Group was chosen as the manufacturer for Yudy’s fruit cart.

Our team handled everything necessary to ensure the cart could operate legally. This included the design and submission of the blueprints, building the fruit cart to code, coordinating with the health department to ensure the fruit cart would pass inspection, and acting as liaison between the agencies and Yudy.

From day one, our mission was to deliver a fruit cart that would pass inspection and be ready for business.

Maria Ponce and Kimberly Tapia, a mother and daughter duo who own The Food Truck Group, were directly involved in guiding the process. Their experience working with sidewalk vendors and navigating health department regulations helped move everything forward smoothly. This dedication gave Yudy the confidence that her dream was being handled with care.

For a first-time business owner, this support can mean the world.

Celebrating a New Beginning

Once the fruit cart was completed and officially approved, the community came together to celebrate.

The event included a ribbon cutting ceremony to recognize Yudy’s hard work and the collaborative efforts that made this possible. Senator Caroline Menjivar also attended the event and personally congratulated Ydy.

After receiving her awards, Yudy took photos alongside her family, friends, and those that came to celebrate her patience and persistence.

Why Legal Sidewalk Vending Matters

First and foremost, a legal, health-permitted food cart provides stability by preventing the risk of fines. While some businesses can survive those setbacks if they get enough traction, a legal food cart will earn more money in the long run and let the vendor keep every dollar they make.

Having a compliant vending cart reduces financial stress and increases trust between the vendor and customers. When customers see that a business went through the proper processes, it reinforces confidence in the food being served.

There will always be people who disregard the legality of a business and eat the food anyways, but it doesn’t hurt to make more customers by going through the processes and earning the trust of those more weary.

The process can feel overwhelming at first, but the long-term benefits more than make up for it.

For Yudy, choosing to pursue a legal operation gave her peace of mind and positioned her business for steady growth. ICON CDC and The Food Truck Group couldn’t be more proud of her for taking the time and effort to see this through to the end.

A Foundation For The Future

Yudy’s Amazing Fruit represents more than a single success story. This is a culmination that shows how access, education, and collaboration can bridge the gap between a dream and reality.

ICON CDC provided the funding and support. The Food Truck Group handled manufacturing, permits, and health compliance. Their dedication to help present the perfect foundation for Yudy’s business. This also gave them the acknowledgement of community leaders, who came to celebrate the fruit of their labor with Yudy’s family.
